It's Easier To Fake A Twitter Account Than An Orgasim

The number of fake Twitter accounts is somewhere between 5-10% which represents some 10 to 25 million accounts. Twitter is definitely a valuable social platform that will remain to be relevant for both business, consumers and the spread of rapid fire information. Twitter usually knows before most news sources and is one of the main drivers of viral marketing success.

But with all the positive attributes, Twitter needs to clean up their platform act. As authenticity and credibility continue to dominate 2014, Twitter must continue to prove its worthiness. They cannot let companies like this invade the social platform.
Inside a Twitter Robot Factory
Twitter has initiated a reporting tool for people to report fake twitter accounts to help combat this problem but if you have a Twitter account you will still notice on a weekly basis fake accounts spamming. Do us all a favor and report them. Be authentic and let's clean this platform up.

The End of Duck Dynasty is Near, Part 2

I wrote a blog post titled, "The End of Duck Dynasty is Near", back on October 2013 stating that due to the nature of the overt conservative philosophy and societal views shared, the inevitable offense will play itself out. As I predicted, and I am sure others did, Phil Robertson delivered on his promise.

See story here 'Duck Dynasty' star Phil Robertson suspended over anti-gay comments

As A&E  Network suspended Phil, due to Duck Dynasty's massive audience, social media has taking Duck Dynasty to viral levels for public deliberation. The two main sides are based on Freedom of Speech opposed to being culturally and racially offensive. Both have a position that is greater in scope politically, religiously and culturally in American and across the world.

These three global scopes are being discussed and even placing some in civil war. Duck Dynasty seem to touch a nerve that I am inclined to believe, A&E network producers discussed the potential such occurrence. A.E. networks primary programming focus began based on intriguing shows but have recently transitioned to reality television that is produced edgy shows like Dog the Bounty Hunter, Inked, Gene Simmons and Criss Angel Mind Freak to name a few.

Per their A.E Networks Wikipedia page, the channel, which originally focused programming on biographies, documentaries, and drama series (especially crime dramas and mysteries), has expanded to include reality television programming.

As the three main issues take center stage in public discussion, the show will receive an initial audience viewership boost but will quickly dwindle within two to three years. As the debate dissipates from public discussion the interest for the show will vanish as the show will have ran its natural course. Hats off to A&E network and the Robertson's for capitalizing on the show and the other streams of revenue that transpires.

Till the show is no longer, take some time to follow the online debate and watch a couple shows to develop your own opinion.

Why Advertisers Will Leave Facebook

Facebook continues to make missteps with both their users and business partners. How many times can they afford to make bad business decisions before businesses and or users, abandon the social media platform. In the latest inadvertent‎ admission by Facebook revealed that organic reach is falling dramatically and falling short on reach. Why this is occurring and their response is flabbergasting. Yes, I used the word flabbergasting.

To set the stage, the news was discovered in a pitch deck that found its way to Ad Age. The deck contained several statements explaining the shift, "expect organic distribution of an individual page's posts to gradually decline over time" and paid distribution "to maximize delivery of your message in news feed" and finally "Your brand can fully benefit from having fans when most of your ads show social context, which increases advertising effectiveness and efficiency,"

In sum, Facebook is attempting to further monetize the platform while compromising their initial mission and vision:

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.

This new direction will only empower sharing of content from large advertisers and organizations that can afford to advertise on the platform. Additionally, content that will be exposed to users will be selected based on this algorithmic system that is skewed towards paid content. Content that could be valuable for users to share will be either scarce or never exposed. As a direct result, advertisers will move to other platforms that allow for their content to be properly exposed and shared at the discretion of the user.

Consumers are becoming savvy to platform's control and influence and do not like when knowing their content exposure is being controlled or selected for them. They want to control the type, frequency and means as to what content exposure they receive. Will Facebook backtrack on this new model or will they just continue to believe that the platform is too large that missteps like this will not receive dire results. I guess we will wait and see how the fallout plays itself out.

Snorestop Controversial Ad Does Not Convert

Accomplishing millions of impressions is great, but if it does not result in improving branding or conversions, than the effort and money was wasted. In the case of Snorestop, the results have been mostly negative and damaging for the company. See Snorestop billboard advertisement below.

How they will calculate the ROI is their business, but from a branding perspective, the massive negative attention the ad has received will be hard to overcome. Additionally, the ad's contain no brand identity except for the #hashtag which has zero correlation to the brand. When viewing this ad for the first time, I had No idea what type of products or services they provided. The discussion surrounding this ad focuses more around the controversy and little about the company.

In an interview, it was revealed that the company suffered during the economic downturn and this is an effort to rebound. Creating controversial marketing is nothing new for this company, but this time they might have taken it too far.

What's your thoughts?

Mobile Email's Massive Growth

The percentage of emails read on mobile devices has surged to over 50% up from just 4% less than four years ago. What does this mean for you email marketing strategy?

You must design with mobile in mind.

Email marketing is still a viable marketing activity and will continue as people check two essential items multiple times daily, email and social media. Designing for mobile takes a special expertise that few interactive designers have mastered and most importantly, the copy writing must be short and engaging.

How many times a day to you check your email on your mobile device?

The End of Duck Dynasty is Near, Part 1

The most popular Reality Show in Cable TV history will be coming to a firery end. The 4th season has introduced the oldest sibling Alan Robertson who is a preacher but has joined the show to assist with Public Relations and spread the word of God to more people.

Duck Dynasty is based around the Robertson family who live in Northeast Louisiana. Like all reality show formulas, it follows the family in their personal and business lives. What is different about this family and what makes this reality show so popular, is that there is no drinking debauchery, no overtly sexual content and being over the top focused on worldly possessions does not enter this reality. So what makes it interesting, well the business is booming (Duck Commander), the three-stooge like work parodies and good ole wholesome family values and fun.

But, why is it going to end? Well, all good things have to come to end because when you're on top in the worldly game of entertainment, not just somebody, but everybody is looking to knock you off. And unfortunately, the Robertson's well intentions is exactly what is going to be the crucifix in the end. Bringing in the eldest Robertson who is a preacher wanting to spread the word of God, Phil Robertson's comments about "yuppies" and questioning why the editors bleeped out the word "Jesus".

So, as much as I thoroughly enjoy Duck Dynasty, the ending is near and due to their strong convictions, the crash course is set.

Final Note: to the producers, please give Si Robertson his own show.

Marketing Reports Are Useless

Reports are great but without identifying actionable steps to KPI's (key performance indicators) they remain useless. I have read reports that were one page and some that were 100 pages that went into extensive reporting detail but offered no recommendations. For example, a trend as been identified that the target market in Tier 1 is responding to a certain CTA (Call for Action) within emails. The data is revealed and cross referenced via email data, Google Analytics and landing page data. The is fantastic that a positive conversion trend is revealed and reported, but the next step is taking action on this item either by means of continuing the strategy or modifying the strategy by incorporating in other marketing assets.

Do your reports reflect this type of actionable recommendations? If not, incorporate it now!

3 Major Content Marketing Mistakes

Content Marketing is one of the hottest buzz words and trends for 2013. As we know with online marketing trends, everybody from major agencies to novices jump in and most, with no experience or preparation. Content marketing has suddenly become even more important due to the recent announcement from Google stripping all organic data as a result insisting all marketers provide content that is relevant, trustworthy and engaging.

The 3 Major Content Marketing Mistakes:

1. Sales or promotional driven. No gimmicks. No buy right now. No Limited offers.

2. Non-Relevant. If the content does not resonate or engage the target market it will die a quick death online. Nobody will see it and it will be deemed irrelevant. Create content that is useful.

3. More the merrier. Content marketing does not mean push out as much as you can marketing. This is a tactic of Black Hat SEO and Google is on to this with penalizing sites that push duplicate articles.

Keep this in mind as you are developing content and an annual content marketing strategy. The Internet police are cracking down and those that will succeed have valuable, engaging and relevant content to share.

Please add to my list of Major Content Marketing Mistakes in the comments section below.

SEO Is Not DEAD! Just Disfigured

Well, maybe just a little disfigured but in the end, it will always be about content. How it's written, how it engages and how others use it.

To catch you up on the current HUGE SEO NEWS The Day that SEO Died (Sort of)

In sum, Google has encrypted search date which means you will not be able to see what Keywords are driving traffic to your site and be used to convert. 100% percent of search queries from organic traffic is not provided anymore. If you want to see search queries, you will have to pay for Adwords then do paid search where you will receive data but not organic data. And YES, there is a difference.

In support of this move by Google, there objective is to empower people to create relevant content and be rewarded for that in a multitude of ways including engagement of your content via reviews, social conversations, testimonies and purchasing. This opens the door further for social media search to being an invaluable source in the near future.

What does this all come down to? You guessed it, the biggest BUZZ term in Digital Marketing circles of the year, Content Marketing.

TOMS Shoes Facing Branding Dilemma

TOMS Shoes has run into a branding problem as acquisitions are slung about the company taking a holier-than-thou position. Founder Blake Mycoskie vehemently denies these claims and states that "no matter, what your going to have haters." And further, "the bigger TOMS becomes, the louder they'll shout." Business experts want to categorize this simply as a business model decision but fail to realize that it extends deeper into the company landing straight on its brand strategy.

Whether Mycoskie intentionally developed the brand strategy or if it naturally occurred as a result of the distinct business model, one could only derive. The perception of holier-than-thou permeates throughout their marketing communication, experiential marketing activities and company culture. If you don't fit this image than be judged.

Don't get me wrong, Tom's is an amazing brand and one that will be around for a long time. The work they have done with the needy is highly commendable. Their shoes were a perfect innovative product at the time and now copied by others that lack the vision that Mycoskie embodied.  But this type of branding niche has a down side if not carefully managed.

Will this ruin Tom's brand future.

By no means will this have a long-term effect on the brand unless they do not make a concerted effort to address the issue that has presented itself. A branding effort will need to be implement in a subtle way as to not bring attention to the issue anymore that has already been made public. The brand needs to get back to the core and focus on doing good while not over broadcasting this fact.

Don't Forget the Human Side of Big Data

Big Data is one of the most discussed and written about marketing 2013 strategy topics that will not be going away any time soon. Sorry. The fact of the matter is that we have more data than every before and data that is tracking peoples use of marketing tools.

The Fortune 100's are able to hire data guru's while the rest of us are trying to figure out how to harness then analyze this data in order to put into actionable activities. But one item we all must remember no matter what size of company or what data guru's you have at your disposable is the human side to data. Yes, data can predict in most cases but not all. Humans make decisions based on a variety of factors and the decision is not always predictable. Oops, did I say that out loud.

As we venture down the fast track of big data and develop resources to utilize within our marketing mix do follow the data industry leaders to learn what they are doing while scaling a solution for your company.

#Hashtag vs Keyword

Hashtags and keywords and both vital online marketing tactics and both share some of the same definition attributes but also have some distinct functional mechanics.

Let's begin with the basic definitions:

Keyword
(1) In text editing and database management systems, a keyword is an index entry that identifies a specific record or document.
(2) In programming, a keyword is a word that is reserved by a program because the word has a special meaning. Keywords can be commands or parameters. Every programming language has a set of keywords that cannot be used as variable names. Keywords are sometimes called reserved names . (3) A word used by a search engine in its search for relevant Web pages.
Hashtag
The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.
The similarities are that both are a word or phrases that is a key identifier to reference by the author and to be searched. Now the difference, the word or phrase is only identified by it originating platform.  A hashtag is now only identified to its platform Twitter. A keyword is identified with the giant search platform Google and diluted into other areas of online marketing language.

Additionally, keywords are a long term not a limited or one time usage SEO/Social Media strategy. Add in that hashtags can be used as search terms when people want several choices for the word or phrase. Twitter feeds are found in search results especially favoring active twitter accounts and extremely popular terms.
When developing a strategic marketing plan including the usage of hashtags and keywords (should always be included) insure that you understand the difference and the similarities and how to strategically incorporate into your plan. You can expect results varying from top search results, twitter trending, brand impressions and a gateway to sales.
All the Best,
Michael Newhouse

How to write a business Email

Attention spans are limited while not knowing what type of device your contacts are utilizing to open and read your message. So how do you know the email strategy?

Relating to my own experience has a marketing strategist, account manager and business development professional, I open on multiple platforms; mobile, laptop, ipad and pc. Each device provides a different experience but the main issue is the allotted time to read the email. Taking that into consideration with the fact that a growing number of email's are opened on a mobile device, the length of the email is the critical factor.

As our attention span demands brief snippets of information vs long form communication, your email content must be concise and communicated succinctly so that your contact can process and respond on a mobile device. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Pinterest, Linkedin and other social media platforms have limited posting character allowance with links to longer forms of communication if desired.

So when crafting your next business email correspondence, take into consideration how your contact will be experiencing your business communication.

What's missing in your Brand Monitoring

Most businesses are online with a website, social media presence and possibly doing some SEO within those properties. Now some have taken the next step to include monitoring brand content and industry specific conversations online. Tools to monitor these activities vary from free (Google Alerts) to paid (Raven Tools) and can be set to keyword terms that are being used to describe and define your brand.

So what is missing with Brand Monitoring?

Missing from Brand Monitoring is when marketing agencies are contracted to provide social media and content strategy services that are Not capable of accurately representing the brand. This type of brand negligence can rapidly damage the brand with months of work needed to clean up the mess. Just cause an agency states that they know social media and/or content management does not mean they are astute in this marketing activity. Your responsibility as a brand or agency of record (AOR) is to perform your own online review which should include basic searches about the company and its constitutes.

The current customer is getting savvier by the day with reading reviews, joining brand's social media platforms, performing their own search and finally, ad networks are getting in on this action by way of designed ads that include who likes what brand and what they are saying. For the unskilled marketer, this can be a daunting task with a wide variety of answers online.

The amount of information and data about your brand is there for your taking. So take it and run with it! What you'll find is truly a gold mine of information and the most embracing, wonderful brand ambassadors that can do more for your brand than ever imaginable.

All the Best,

Michael Newhouse
